Welcome to Jasper Basket Works Web Site!
Here you can see the beautiful handwoven maple wood baskets that we make in Jasper, a small rural town located in Southern Ohio. You can also get to know us, learn how our baskets are made, how we got started making baskets and where you can located our baskets other than this web site. We started making baskets six years ago. Prior to this, I (my name is Victoria) worked full time as a Registered Nurse and my husband (Dan) worked as a Sprinkler Fitter. We learned to make the maple wood baskets mostly by trial and error, although we did pick up some tips from some basket weavers from other wood basket companies.
To begin, we must first buy a maple veneer log and have it cut into veneer. This process required debarking and boiling the log, then placing the log on the veneering maching and having a large blade cut the wood into the proper thickness. We then bring the veneer to our shop, where we cut it into strips of 1", 1/2" etc. to use for spokes and weavers.
The bottoms of our baskets are either solid wood or a woven reinforced base. Patterns and base plates are needed to make sure the bases are the same on every style of basket.
We use molds to weave the basket to ensure the same size and shape. Dan makes the molds for us. Weaving stands are used to speed up the weaving process. Dan also makes the weaving stands.
Our baskets are woven using two strips of maple wood and the rim is attached with special nails.
Our handles are either wood or leather and they are nailed or rivited in place.
We use a water based stain ( that is our own mixture)on the baskets and a special finish is added to the baskets to complete the process.
Our baskets go through a quality check before they are sold or put into inventory. If the basket does not meet the quality check, it is placed in the secondary line. ( Click on Secondary line to the left of this page to find out more about these baskets.) |
